Privacy policy
Dark Skies is built to be useful and trustworthy — not to harvest you. This page explains, in plain terms, what the app does and does not collect.
The short version: no account is required, there are no ads, and we don't sell your data. Your saved locations stay on your device. Diagnostics are optional, privacy-respecting, and off by default.
No account, no profile
You can open Dark Skies and start planning immediately. There is no sign-up, no email, no password and no user profile. We do not build an advertising profile of you.
Location
If you grant location access, your location is used only to calculate sky and weather conditions for your spot — the dark window, Night Score, Milky Way and Moon timing, and the local forecast. It is never used to track you. The app asks for location when you open a planning view, not at first launch, and works in a reduced form if you decline.
Saved Locations — the spots you save — are stored on your device. To produce a forecast, the app sends location coordinates to our weather and astronomy data providers solely to return conditions for that point; these requests are not tied to an account or used to identify you.
Camera and motion (AR)
The optional AR sky view uses your camera to overlay sky targets on the live image, and motion sensors to align them. Nothing from the camera is recorded, stored or transmitted.
Notifications
If you turn on Best Night alerts, the app schedules local notifications to let you know when an excellent night is coming. You can turn them off at any time in your device settings.
Diagnostics
Diagnostics are off by default. If you choose to turn them on in Settings, the app may share crash and usage information to help us make Dark Skies more reliable. This data does not include your coordinates, saved location names, gear, or purchase identifiers. You can turn diagnostics off again whenever you like.
Purchases
Dark Skies is free to start, with an optional Pro upgrade. Purchases are processed by Apple's App Store or Google Play under their terms; we do not receive or store your payment details.
Children
Dark Skies is a general-audience app and is not directed at children under 13.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update the date above and post the revised version here.
